When you have a OOA situation you're in deep sh*t to begin with. That being said, as the donor you are substantially less paniced and you have likely just taken a breath.. Accordingly, let's assume Murphy does in fact show up... Who would you rather he attack??? The guy that is down to his last breathe of the guy that has had no problems??? Any competent diver in midly good physical shape should be able to hold his/her breathe for 30 - 45 seconds, so even if you do have a situation where your back up reg has gone south during the dive, you've given the OOA diver a few breathes and then you go into buddy breathing mode.. But the important point is that you have no idea how long a paniced OOA diver has been without air, so if you are worried about Murphy why would you do that to the paniced OOA diver????

Furthermore, by having the reg necklaced under your chin if it should happen to freeflow during the dive you are in a better position to know it as opposed to it dangling somewhere behind you in one of those retaining devices...

Hope that helps...
