I wouldn't say its a lost technique.. for many Rebreather divers this is a skill that must be learned.
Not all rebreathers have the ability to purge the hose (for example you flood a hose on a Draeger dolphin.. dive is over)

For an inspiration the Airflow is opposite than shown (other rebreathers use same direction as shown)
The idea is to put the water in a safe place.. On an inspiration that in the bottom of the exhalation breathing bag (out of the way)
start with head down.. lean to right then up.. water will be forced to tee and into bag, one gotcha if you do this more than once water already
in the bag will now end up in the scrubber...

If the rebreather (CCR) is fitted with an ADV (automatic diluent addition valve) the skill works
almost exactly as a two hose regualtor since there will be a lowering of pressure at the valve and wil fore diluent in..

Water can be forced out of the bag, but thats another skill...
