He argued that it's not enough that one's choices don't put other divers at risk. He in effect argues that my life is not just mine, that it belongs to my family and friends.

No matter how I die, they're not going to be happy. They'd be even less happy knowing that I wasn't living life.

Or as Homer says- taking stupid risks is the only way to live. (remove the stupid part and go forth)
