Next time you are on a boat, don't jump in the water first. Take some time and observe 1. Casual buddies who know each other, and 2. Casual buddies who are paired up on the boat. I think you will be amazed that there are virtually no casual buddy pairs doing proper dive briefings and reviewing hand signals and emergency protocols. Serious buddies will have a dive briefing but they will be a minority.
When you have a new buddy, try explaining to him how you want to do an emergency ascent in an OOA situation. My bet is you will get an incredulous stare.
