Just think. The "once every 5 years" diver shows up and wants to go on a wall dive. The DM sets him/her up with the gear and programs it to have a maximum depth. If the idiot diver tries to descend below the programmed depth, it will stop his/her descent. Then the DM can swim over and bring them back easily instead of chasing the idiot to a dangerous depth -- especially since so many of them do nitrox to allow more dives.
Kinda like a leash for the resort divers.
