Need recommendation for affordable place to get certified in socal

Hi,

I'm a newbie and would like to get into scuba. Can someone recommend a place to get certified in the LA area that is affordable? I've read stuff online and most of the info focuses on picking the right instructor. While I realize this is important, it's so hard to choose, when there are so many instructors and they work at different places that have different pricing schemes (some places use hidden costs in books, etc) so that it is hard to compare between places. Can someone recommend any specific places that known to have affordable total costs and competent instructors?
