I'm thinking of getting a Garmin eTrex Vista, a lower-end handheld GPS receiver. Not owning a boat I don't want to get into a bigger or fancier unit.

The writeup says the Vista has "a built-in basemap showing highways, interstates and railroads along with a general outline of lakes, rivers, coastlines and marine Navaids for the entire U.S. It will also accept up to 24 megs of downloaded map data from Garmin's line of optional MapSource CD-ROMs."

Are there any particular download packages that Garmin owners would recommend? It seems like I saw a discussion sometime back that touched on a waterways package and also more detailed USGS maps. While a main use will be cataloging spots along islands and mainland beaches in Southern California, hiking in the San Gabriels and driving are also potential uses. Thanks for any input.
