Since you're going to be in Carlsbad, you might want to check out the San Diego boats (Blue Escape, Lois Ann, Horizon etc.)
They run day and half-day trips to Wreck Alley, Coronados Islands (just over the border) and the Point Loma kelp beds. The Horizon also does multi-day trips to near and remote destinations.
You might also try beach diving in and around La Jolla, which is great under the right conditions.
