Quickly (and no ofeense intended here):
1. You assume wrong.
2. I don't think there's any "valid" reason to run out of air during a normal diving situation.
3. What you described is outside the scope of that so in your case, yes, you wouldn't have been 86'd.
4. However, noble as your intentions were and successful as the result may have been, don't lose sight of the fact that you also came dangerously close to violating the first rule of rescue: Never make yourself a victim.
