Was on my way over to Catalina this morning, very concerned about the weather, but it was going ok. There was very little swell and almost no wind. About 5 miles from Catalina Terry came running into the wheelhouse and said look at that, and pointed to my left.
I looked over to see the most ominous sight on the water that I ever witnessed. There was a water spout about 40 to 50' across and 30 to 40' high coming right towards the boat. It kept changing size around, and had white water all around it. I know you cannot out run one, and what direction do you turn to run, so I stayed on course. We were then on a collision course, and then not, then on, then not. Finally it went behind us be about 50'. Way to close for me.
Anyone ever had one hit them? I have know idea what extent of damage would have been.
