I think a strong swimmer could do it. If he didn't become dinner enroute. There are some variables here mostly temperature and current. Not considering these two factors. I think I could have done it when I was in my prime. Especially considering the option. Nowadays I would just ring the dinner bell and wait for the sharks. May be drap a piece of kelp across my belly for a garnishment.
I don't know the temperature/currents of the English channel. It is a lot farther than the oil rigs and people swim it.
