If you inflated your BC and ditched your weights you'd be a sitting duck for any boat that happened along, especially in the fog.
The bc also has whistles, mirrors, safety sausage and your lights so may want to keep it.
There are annual swim and paddle races from catalina Island to Manhatan pier, this is 20-25 miles. All racers have boat escorts.
