"You can't really blame poor Dan. Anyone here would do the same thing"

Not everyone. In all the interviews he gave, not once did he admit he was partially at fault. If I was an inexperienced diver attempting an advanced dive, I wouldn't stay underwater for 15-20 minutes out of sight of my buddies. He should have at least remained in sight of the rigs. When he finally did surface, he said he could see the boat and the rigs, but decided to drift and wait to be picked up. Ray has already paid for the mistake of allowing the DM to work on his boat. The only people who share the blame are the DM and Dan himself. They each made mistakes, but fortunately, no physical harm was done. Now Dan is trying to cash in. It was bad enough that he blamed everyone else, but he has now sunk to a new low.
