Elaine, I think part of the problem is that for a select few, diving is like the military. As a drill instructor you must call your students maggots and make them feel like scum so that they may someday hope to achieve the God-like standing of their leader. While learning to march in unison, dress exactly the same, do everything the same way and rarely be able to pass inspection the first time around sounds a lot like some classes, none of it helps in the real World. It is simply training to get you into the mindset of doing things one way and only one way. It works in battle, and it works in team diving. Of course, 99% of the divers are out looking at the pretty fishies, taking snapshots, shooting small creatures and exploring wrecks, reefs and caves and having a great time doing it.
There is a place for everything, including team diving. Technical precision makes that safer and can mean the difference between living or dying. Obviously you don't need a buddy holding perfect trim and wearing all the right gear next to you in order to get the great images you share with us, but some would like us to believe that's true. If someone recovers an artifact from a wreck, restores and displays it and tries to learn the history of the ship it was found on, there will always be a noise from the peanut gallery calling you a wreck destroyer.
The best we can do is to continue loving our pastime in the way we feel most comfortable with. If the way we dive, dress, swim or even the air we breathe isn't good enough for the ego of someone with a superiority complex, it's their problem, not ours.
Continue to enjoy the underwater World as you have. You only need to please one person.
