Elaine, I think part of the problem is that for a select few, diving is like the military. As a drill instructor you must call your students maggots and make them feel like scum so that they may someday hope to achieve the God-like standing of their leader. While learning to march in unison, dress exactly the same, do everything the same way and rarely be able to pass inspection the first time around sounds a lot like some classes, none of it helps in the real World. It is simply training to get you into the mindset of doing things one way and only one way. It works in battle, and it works in team diving. Of course, 99% of the divers are out looking at the pretty fishies, taking snapshots, shooting small creatures and exploring wrecks, reefs and caves and having a great time doing it. |
