My understanding (I haven't actually looked inside at the differences) is that the problem is not related to thread damage but rather the retainer for the yoke or DIN fitting bottoming out and stressing the far side of the first stage body. The retrofit has some kind of collar that prevents bottoming out.

You're probably right that mine have already been upgraded but I don't have the regs handy to look at. In any case, I still don't think there is a problem for properly serviced regs.
