One thing I would consider mandatory for open water crossings is a sea anchor. I carried one for years and always brought one on deliveries if the vessel didn't have one on aboard. If you go DIW it'll make life a lot better (considering the situation...), and if you have VA, BayWatch or USCG looking for you you'll maintain your position. I'm not a salesman, and I don't even play one on TV, but Para-anchor is a very nice product and has the advantage of being able to be folded into probably lunch-box size for a small vessel. The most important thing is to watch the weather, pick your days, and maintain a well found vessel. Stay wet
