I hate to disagree with your psychological evaluation, but I personally believe that this scenario is most like a figment of one's imagination or he most likely wouldn't be here to talk about it, if it happened the way it was described. I saw no typos, did you?
Which ever the case, I have the suspicion that some divers have no concept of the difference in diving with compressed air vs free diving, the danger of not understanding the causes of lung expansion injury and the 15 feet danger zone of pressure change.
So yes, there is much to worry about.
