John, some input from "another" Frank ... snorkeling at Lover's Cove on Catalina can be fun, but if I were choosing I'd go for the Casino Point underwater park on the other side of Avalon. It's heavily trafficked by scuba divers, and thus can get crowded especially on weekends, but I've found it fun as well for snorkeling or freediving. Casino Point has more varied structure and seems to have a more interesting variety of species, while Lover's Cove (at least when I've been there) seems to lean heavily toward calicos and opaleyes fattened up on fish food from the tour boat/'sub'. Malaga Cove in Palos Verdes can be good, but visibility can be hit-and-miss (with a lot of misses). Good luck wherever you choose to go!
