Yeah n, no kidding you need to watch the waves even spending a dry day on the beach.

About 3 years ago, a couple of friends of mine went up to Fort Ross area in a boat they took out of Bodega Bay.
While they were drifting offshore fishing, all of a sudden a HUGE set of waves came through that almost rolled them. Good for them they were offshore far enough or else they would have been in trouble.

Later that day when they came in and were driving home they heard on a news report on the radio that four teen age beach combers were hit by that rogue wave and two of them got sucked in off the beach and died. This happened at River mouth at Jenner.

It was the same wave.

The North Coast is nothing to fool with.
