first california dive

I am traveling to the LA area in late march, and want to do some diving down there. Are there any beach dive areas?? Should I take a dive boat?? Who is the best charter service?? What are the water temps that time of year. I am from the northwest, and usualy dive with a dry suit. Is this overkill for down there? My only other suit is a 3 mill. Any good dive shops?? Any info would be helpfull.
