mhk, remember that john walker asked the following
in his post above:

"If your console comes from your left side you must hold it with your left hand, correct?

How do you deflate your BCD with your left hand while watching your SPG in your left hand for that 15' safety mark?"

i was responding to this specific q of john's and
my reply was that precisely b/c of his observation,
it would be better to have the console on the right
side if the inflator is on the left.

i never ever ever ever said that the way you
configure your gear is worse than mine. i just
stated that there was a simple sol'n to john's
query.

i think i stated my case solidly. you can then
argue for your way. (i have had my compass on
my left wrist before and it just kept falling
out of the wrist holder--i almost lost the
compass 3 times during one single dive. maybe 'your way'
is very sound, i just don't want anything on
my wrists, that's all. jim hoffman--a friend of
yours i believe...?...stated that he had seen
too many people lose wrist-mounted gear in the
surfline. perhaps you can discuss this issue
w/him in more detail.)

also, i DID state that i can indeed clip my console
off to the anchor line itself, THUS freeing my
right hand again (...perhaps you missed that in
my post, but i'm sure it's there).

also, as i queried johnb below, isn't that the
job of a 'jon line'? i mean, why hold onto the
anchor line at all, when you can free a hand completely
and use something else to anchor yourself to the anchor line?

in addition, if there is no current, then your
q is moot. just a reminder of your q:

"How then is having 2 hands being used *better* than only using one hand and having the ability to hold an ascent line IN A
CURRENT????" [[emphasis mine]]

i would choose not to dive in a situation w/strong current,
but one never knows when one can suddenly arise during
the duration of a dive. however, i don't think my
suggestion will at all impede one's ability to hold onto
an anchor line if one uses either a 'jon line' or if one clips
one's console to the anchor line for easy visual reference,
while holding onto the line w/the now free hand.

hope this post is clearer.

= : )
