Bottom line surface swim tests have somewhat valid for messuring fitness levels
However long steady distance swimming, without the aid of fins and other swimming aid is a lot more
about technique than fitness.

How would I know, I was a competitive swimmer in college and I stll swim more than 5 miles a week.
Could I do more 400 yards in less than 10 min; yes could I do that in the ocean wearing a dry or wet suit while towing another
diver most likely not, could I do it underwater wearing full gear (DIR or any other config) no.

Does this mean I'm not fit to tech dive, I don't think so.

You want accurate information about cardiac fitness to dive use a cardiac stress test, not a swim test.

Your argument holds no water and nieter does the GUE requirment for the swim test if its used as a pass fail to go into the class
based on testing one cardiac fitness to dive as you say.
