There is a dive spot called Jade Cove along PCH 1 north of Hearst Castle and south of Lucia at a USFS campsite called Plaskett Creek. It is a long steep walk down the trail. Jade diving there is good. The hike back up is miserable. If you bring a high pressure steel 80 tank, it is not as bad as with larger tanks.

You need good boots, not just your sneakers or your wetsuit boots. The kelp is thick there in summer, so diving there in spring is better, before the kelp bed gets thick again. Diving there in winter is not a good idea due to the storm surge in the small cove. It has a rip, as do most small coves. You want a calm day if you are diving there for jade.

You can camp at the USFS campsite nearby or at any of the commercial campgrounds along that road. They are really busy from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
