Why? Well, I think it's important to check your air supply periodically if it's difficult or impossible to do that presents an unacceptable situation to me. Possibly I will become overconfident and lazy, run out of air and drown.
2) Entanglemnt: Apples to apples, the snapclip and spg attached to a d-ring hanging outside the harness is more of a hazard then tucked under the strap with no snapclip and more streamlined.
