Uni from Mission Bay Jetty...safe to eat?

I gathered 4 dark purple and one red urchin from the inside of Mission Bay Jetty today and was wondering if it's O.K to eat. I know urchin feed on kelp, but have heard the water inside can be dirty. I won't be eating it raw, but it won't be totally cooked either. thanks
