Measure the difference in abundance with all species including all the invertebrates against a often dived site to a remote site that is seldom visited. You will see and be able to measure the collateral damage that has been caused by all of us.

anchoring does not do significant damage to the
Monterey ecosystem. This was a quite unexpected
result."

I don't believe that for a minute. Again compare sites where anchors are dropped against sites where they aren't.
