I understand what you are saying, however tape media is subject to wearing out. You will not experience degradation of the video image, but instead I am sure you have experienced the image pixelating (for lack of a better word) while watching an older tape. This happens when there is any type of flaw in the tape. be it a crease, scratch or wear point. You don't lose the image all at once, but you do start to see minor glitches that pop up more and more the longer you use the tape.
