Good lord, I'm sick of everyone pinning the blame on the diver for being left behind. Should he have done things differently? Yes. Does that make being left behind his fault? Not even a little bit.

Lets imagine he had done every single thing right -- talked with his buddies, initiated an immediate ascent on separation, etc etc etc. And then let's imagine something happened that made surfacing impossible -- maybe a suicide clip caught on the rig, whatever, doesn't matter since we're imagining. Let's just say something happened to prevent him from surfacing where and when he should. He STILL would have been left behind.

The DM screwed up, not Dan. Every ounce of responsibility for this goes on the boat, not the diver.
