Hey, I just got back from Southern Califonria. I was stayin gin Newport Beach. Anyway, I ended up not going to San Diego or Catalina as planned, but spent most of the time in NEwport Beach. What I noticed from talking to people is, is that the water is considerably warmer in Newport Beach or South of Palos Verdes... Is that true? My surfing friend there said they don't need a wetisuit in Newport beach in the summer. Anyway, this shell was alive, so I didn't keep it, but my friend said he never saw on before fter the 15 years he lived there. Anyway, what is it? Is it rare? I found it just by digging a small hole and finding it there. One of the biggest surprises about the beach though, was that it was entirley covered in live clams. There seemed to be 100 per square foot!!! Anyway here is the photo.
