OK, time to either upset a lot of divers (maybe Captains), incurring their wrath, or make some crew happy. I'll opt for the crew's happiness.

To All Boat Captains: for your next open boat or charter, add a $10 or $15 per day per diver "tip convenience fee" and give that money to your crew. If you feel they didn't do thier jobs or you received valid complaints, give it back to your customers. After all, the Captain is in charge of his or her boat.

This solves the problem of those who don't know to tip the crew, fail to tip the crew, are just cheap, or complain that the crew is already being paid.

The cruise lines and some other operations already do this - it is upfront and applies to all. You also aren't surprised or embarrased if you forgot to bring a tip.

I find it amazing how many people just leave a dollar or spare change thinking the "tip" is for food ("let's see, 15% of a $4 hamburger is 60 cents..."). Also, those from overseas or out of the area may not know the customary tip amount.

OK, bring out my voodoo doll and the pins ...
