Abalone Regulations ???

If my kids, ages 9 & 10, want to try to take some abalone this summer, I've offered to teach them before we go. What permits
will they need? As far as I know, under age 16 they don't need fishing licences, but I suspect they would need an abalone card.
Any thoughts on this?
