I've heard this before. But, I was taught never to enter a surf zone with a reg in your mouth as you can embolize in only a few feet and the shock of a large wave could cause you to hold your breath. I even asked and was told in L.A. county they prefer you to enter with a snorkel in your mouth and exit all the way to dry sand the same way. Is it different with large surf, or an advanced dive spot? I've heard Monastery Beach is only for the really advanced person and maybe there's some conditions you should keep your reg and not your snorkel in your mouth? Help me learn about this.
