I would agree with Steve on both points above. I have a WI BC and it is a toughie to remove and hold onto underwater just starting out. However I would also go farther and say after you get comfortable in the water, try practice this with your instructor in shallow water. I've had to remove my BC twice, once entanglement, once equipment failure. Durning the failure I was wearing a drysuit & I'm a big guy (i.e. I really float!), it's possible and not that hard.

It's a great thing to ask for help and to try to learn something new, seems like few divers make that effort. I would also suggest you discuss with your instructor if you have not already, he might have an idea for be willing to spend a few more minutes with you to learn it properly. If not then be sure to not recommend him to any of your friends.
