i also have mixed feelings about ripping off anothers mask. but long ago, when my mask was ripped off, and my regulator/2nd stage was ripped out of my mouth, it was just another day at the Ocean for me, no big deal.

i agree that Navy methods should not be used on civilian divers. i do worry about some of the aforementioned GUE tactics just like you. i clearly do not believe OW1 students should undergoe this kind of underwater hazing. for advanced divers who want to be cave divers, thats a different story.

its like i already told MHK-Mike, i carry a spare mask in my right B/C pocket. if anyone rips my mask off, i put on the replacement, then look for the lost mask, with spear in hand, unsheathed from the PCB pipe tip protector!

i am not sure civilian GUE diving instructors would be prepared for that either.
