I just went snorkeling for about 3 hours in Tampa bay today, and saw sharks (Do you know what kind they would be?)As well as lots of sting rays, spoon bills, giant mullet, catfish-like fish in salt water, and many more things. Anyway, the water was also very warm, and there were lots of fish in this area that no one dives in, even though it was very fun.
What would you say makes Californian diving better than Florida, or not better? After going to FLorida and the aquarium, they have hundreds of species of tropical fish, coral reefs, caves, lots of color, warm water, high visibility (except on the west), and then millions of small islands and personal coves waiting to be explored. Then you get to CAlifornia and you can't dive after it rained due to pollution, the water is always freezing, you have kelp forests, but you see one, you've seen them all, very limited fish species, as well as fish, then its mostly dark, no shallow water, no coves except for one or two, although always populated, etc... And then if you had to go diving you would have to get into a dry suit so you don't turn into a popsicle in the water.
