Divers do seem to adopt "pet" fish at the dive sites. They visit the fish, eels, whatever over and over to check on them.

I had a friend with a pet abalone at Catalina. He visited it for over a year and would feed it kelp each time he stopped by. One day it disappeared and he was so upset.
