"Dump the "pony" cluster. Get yourself and your team mate proper training and practice S drills on every dive to keep your skills fresh, it takes about 30 seconds."

What is your backup plan in case your buddy doesn't stick with you? THAT is why you have a redundant breathign system.

"Then dive with out the drag," That argument can be made for ditching your scuba rig and going skin diving.

" trim issues", Wait a minute, those backmount only bc's won't prop your head out of the water if you surface unconscious.

"entanglement hazards," That argument can be made to ditch your second stage, it's an entanglement hazard.

"failure points etc. etc. of the "pony" cluster. " Like the failure points of having a backup second stage that could freeflow without an additional freeflow shutoff, or the entanglement hazard of a canister light mounted to a backpack rather then the customary handheld light.
