Other Ben, I don't know if the guys that wrote the PADI manuals actually dive or not.
I tried this method (having buddy teams hold on to each other), about 20yrs. ago and all I got was both buddies falling in the surf line.
I may be wrong, but I have always felt that the surf line was a no-mans(womans) land. There isn't much you can do for a buddy in the surf line. You as an individual need to get through the surf line(danger Zone) as fast as you can. If there is a problem then make your exit and help (you are in control, not part of the problem).
