The Greater Los Angeles Council of Divers is sponsoring it's second annual Great American Fish Count (GAFC) Fish Identification Lecture Saturday June 9th at the Cabrillo Aquarium in San Pedro (Thomas Guide page 854, grid C2). Sign-In starts at 12:30, and the lecture starts at 1 p.m. When you arrive at the entrance to the parking lot, tell the attendant that you are there for the Fish ID lecture.
This FREE Fish Identification lecture will give you the basic knowledge to identify the common fish of Southern California, and how to conduct a survey. The lecture consists of 63 slides, 54 of which are pictures of fish. You will told the important characteristics of each fish and told how to distinguish it from other species that may appear similar. Also, how to fill out and submit a survey will be explained. The survey information is used by "REEF" (www.reef.org) which has been compiling survey information for several years now (www.fishcount.org).
The lecturer will be Dr. Roy Houston of the Loyalla Marymount Marine Biology Department. After the lecture, you will be able to go into the Cabrillo Aquarium and immediately practice your newly acquired skills.
Although the lecture is free, we would appreciate it if you could register in advance at www.fishcount.org
This free lecture is one of the many efforts of the Greater LA Council of Divers puts out in support of the Diving Community. For more information, go to www.glacd.org.
