Attack of the purple sea urchins

Sunday I spent Father's Day with my son snorkeling at Little Corona, shooting a couple of rolls of film. We just got the pictures back, which underscore an impression I had at the time. Through much of the cove I found vast stretches of denuded rocks almost smothered in purple sea urchins. (I'm not sure exactly how much there was left for them to eat.)

I know these little guys can sweep into an area, eat all the kelp holdfasts, leave a virtual desert and then ride off to the next dinner spot. Is this a recognized threat in beaches like this in So. Calif?
