Deep air question

When Walker certified me for Deep Air a few years ago on the 180 fsw Tuna Clipper at Catalina, it was to qualify me for Nitrox fills other than 32 and 36. But that doesn't make sense. Why a deep air cert for EANx fills other than 32/36? Now, of course, to get different mixes you simply take advanced Nitrox. What was the thinking back then, I've forgotten? Anyone?
