Mike, where did this "fundamental" nonesense come from? I have spent nearly 40 years descending and ascending vertically without a single problem. If I ascended horizontally in my cuff dump dry suit it would be almost impossible to purge the expanding air. And when I descend, I descend head first FAST. Not possible horizontal. Is this a GUE fundamental because a lot of cave complexes are horizontal? Once on the bottom I agree with horizonatal positioning, especially in a ship wreck. And just who or what "mandates" descending and ascending horizontally? An inefficient procedure if I ever heard one. Kindly elaborate.
