News Report: Redondo Baywatch delays diver’s trip to chamber by 2 hours |
Posted by Chris on March 15, 2009 at 17:00:48: On Friday morning March 13, a diver aboard the Great Escape collapsed on the deck after returning from the first dive of the trip at the Palawan. He had numbness in his legs and other symptoms as well. The crew of the Great Escape immediately put the diver on oxygen and the captain called the Coast Guard. The Coast Guard called Redondo Baywatch and sent a chopper. Baywatch arrived first and boarded the GE. When the Coast Guard Chopper arrived to evacuate the diver Baywatch told them to leave because they wanted to handle it. Baywatch then insisted the Great Escape take the diver to King Harbor from flat rock instead of transferring the diver to the Baywatch boat to take him back to Redondo. This one action caused almost an hour delay. Once the Great Escape was docked at King Harbor an apparent jurisdictional dispute between Baywatch (L.A. lifeguards), the Harbor Department, the Redondo Fire department, and the Sherriff delayed any action another hour. While docked at the harbor the Coast Guard called the Great Escape on the radio to see if the diver was evacuated and was appalled when the Captain told them he was still onboard. Finally after an hour elapsed at the King Harbor dock, they put the diver on a L.A. County helicopter and flew him to the Chamber at Catalina. The diver needed several chamber treatments and still has residual issues that may have been caused by the two hour delay. |
