based on my own personal experiences, i have found
that three buddy diving is a pain in the butt. it
seems that the even numbered a group is, the better.
it's been hard to keep track of 2 other divers, but
when you are, say, in a 4-some, then it's just
easier to buddy up in primary pairs in case the
group does break up for some reason.

personally, i prefer not to dive in a 3-some, but
that's not to say it's impossible--you just have
to be extra alert trying to keep track of 2 other divers.

ultimately, the decision is yours no matter what--just
be prepared for all evenutalities.

best wishes and have fun w/your certification.
