the way I understand it is that your OOA buddy probably needs air NOW and doesn't have time to deal with a reg that might not work. if you give up your primary you have a little more time to try out your secondary and if nessesary, share your primary with your buddy and avoid a panic situation. also you might not have a choice as your buddy will be grabbing for any reg he can find.
