Monday, July 9th, the Department of Fish and Game announced the proposed Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) for southern California.

for more information, go to:
http://www.dfg.ca.gov/mrd/mlpa/concepts.html

The above site has a text description of the proposed areas in the north central, south central, and southern California regions. Northern California has not been posted as of Tuesday, July 10th. Maps for north central and south central have been posted as well, but as of July 10th, there is not yet a map for southern California.

Also, the L.A. Times ran an article in the Tuesday, July 10th edition (California Section, page B1), complete with pictures and a map detailing the areas and the level of protection. Leo Carillo to Point Dume is one proposed area, and a large portion of Palos Verdes from Flat Rock to Point Vicente is designated as well. For a text only version of the article, go to:
http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-000056676jul10.story?coll=la%2Dheadlines%2Dcalifornia

DFG is holding a series of meetings for public input on the proposed areas. These 10 meetings (all up and down the coastline) will not be held in the normal "townhall" style previously preferred by DFG. These meetings will accept ONLY written input, then attendees will be formed in small groups with representatives of DFG to discuss and take notes. The three meetings in southern California will be Wednesday, July 25 in LA, Thursday July 26 in Coasta Mesa, and Friday July 27 in San Diego. All meetings will be from 7 to 10 p.m.

More information on the meeting locations can be found at:
http://www.dfg.ca.gov/mrd/mlpa/schedule.html
