Bill, are we to understand that the pool you use to teach your entry level scuba students is:
Cold (55 - 60 F)?
Deep (20 - 25 feet)?
Limited visibility (no more than 10 feet)?
Has surge, surf, chop, and currents?
Has a sandy bottom that can be stirred up?

If it doesn't, how do you know for sure that every one of your students will be able to descend flawlessly and assemble within sight of each other on the very first ocean dive? It seems to me that having a descent line available, particularly on the first few dives, is a reasonable safety precaution that any prudent scuba instructor would use.

The descent line isn't the problem.
